Diversity Lecture - Disparities, Politics, Bias and Other Barriers to Health Care for Latinos

DCRI Diversity Lecture (Duke Clinical Research Institute)
Thursday, September 20, 2018
2:00 - 3:00 PM EST
NP Lower Level Lecture Hall
Racial and ethnic health disparities undermine our healthcare system and our communities. For the country's Latino population, this is especially true. Socio-economic challenges, language barriers, implicit and explicit bias, political and national issues of immigration, the harsh policing of immigrants, and more have an enormous impact on the population's health. And, without question, they effect the level and frequency of medical care Latinos receive. Denial of or indifference to this fact further weakens an already untenable situation.
Who is their advocate? Who should be? What is leadership's collective stake in these outcomes? And why should we care?
Join us for the annual Hispanic Heritage Month program as Mauricio Castro co-founder of North Carolina Congress of Latino Organizations explains how the above named circumstances influence patient care, determine health outcomes, and play a pivotal role in the development and perpetuation of health inequalities among Latinos.
