New Medical Library Kindles are Here!

In addition to FIU Medical Library now offers 10 Kindle Touch e-book readers for HWCOM faculty, students, and staff. Each Kindle reader comes with more than 25 medical titles. See the list of all medical e-book titles.

The Kindle e-book readers are available for HWCOM faculty, students, and staff. They can be checked out at the Medical Library Help Desk for 2 weeks. (No renewals.)  Each Kindle comes with a charger, a carrying case, and a complete instruction for the convenience of library patrons. The medical e-books on the library’s Kindle devices are not available online or for a library patron’s personal Kindle. They can read only on the library’s Kindle devices.

Please note that connecting this device with a personal Amazon/Kindle account is PROHIBITED, and the library will not be liable for any consequences if a library patron chooses to do so.

The Kindle devices and the medical e-book collection have been funded by the Express Mobile Technology Project Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Southeastern/Atlantic (SE/A) Region awarded to FIU Medical Library in 2012.  FIU Medical Library continues to strive to provide and improve the mobile technology offerings for library patrons. If you have any questions about this grant project, please contact Bohyun Kim, Digital Access Librarian at kimb@fiu.edu.

Possible Issues with Off-campus Access to E-resources

FIU UTS and Green Library are in the process of upgrading the library’s firewalls and other core network infrastructure in order to keep the libraries at the leading edge of computing space, performance, and security.

FIU Medical Library shares some systems with Green Library and as a result, during this upgrade process, you may experience problems with off-campus access to library e-resources intermittently. The issue should be resolved completely within two weeks.

If you encounter any problem, please inform us at medlib@fiu.edu.
Thank you for your understanding!

Problem with Off-campus Access to E-Resources on Android Devices

If you are using an Android phone/tablet to access our library e-resources from off-campus, you will get an error message, and you won't be able to view the FIU log-in page. This problem only occurs on an Android device.

We are currently working to fix this problem with the EZproxy vendor. It will be fixed but it may take some time.

Thank you for your patience and letting us know about this issue!

E-Resources' on-campus access problem and a workaround

FIU UTS is performing maintenance at this moment. As a result, the EZProxy which enables all remote access to the library's e-resources is affected. If you have any issue with accessing e-resources on the campus, follow the steps below.

  • Right click the URL of the e-resource on the Medical Library website
  • Copy and paste the URL onto the URL window of a web browser or a text editor.
  • The URL will look like this: http://ezproxy.fiu.edu/login?url=https://online.epocrates.com
  • Remove the ezproxy part in the beginning ( http://ezproxy.fiu.edu/login?url= ).
  • Copy the part after '='. (In this case,  https://online.epocrates.com )
  • Paste into the URL window of a web browser.
  • You should be all set!
Feel free to contact us at medlib@fiu.edu if you have any questions!

DynaMed Weekly Update

Check out this week's DynaMed Weekly Update!

Now Check Out a Laptop at the Medical Library!

Have you ever had a problem with your HWCOM HP laptop during the weekend or in the evening hours when College of Medicine (COM) IT department is closed?  In order to help HWCOM students who need a loaner laptop immediately at those times, the Medical Library is now offering the new Laptop Loaner Program in cooperation with COM IT.  As long as the library is open, you can check out a loaner laptop even when COM IT is closed.

To check out a loaner laptop, visit the Medical Library and ask for one at the Help Desk.  A Help Desk staff member will ask you to fill out a form and check out the laptop to your library account.  A student will need to take his or her own malfunctioning laptop to COM IT for repairs.

Once COM IT finishes the repair and a student receives back his or her own laptop from COM IT, the student will return the loaner laptop to the Medical Library (including the power cords).  Upon the return of the loaner laptop, it will be cleared off of the borrowed item list in the student’s library account.
The loaner laptop and the power cords must be returned in person to a Library Help Desk staff member and cannot be left unattended at the library Help Desk.  Currently, the Medical library has two loaner laptops for check out.

If you have any questions, contact the Medical Library Help Desk at (305) 348-1466.

Information about the Recent Problem with Off-campus Access to USMLEasy

Recently, USMLEasy has changed the URL without notifying the library. For this reason, there has been a problem for our off-campus access to USMLEasy. We have made the change for our proxy system. So you can remotely access USMLeasy.

Please use this URL for off-campus access to USMLEasy:
http://ezproxy.fiu.edu/login?url=http://www.usmle-easy.com

We are making the USMLEasy URL change on the medical library website, but it may take a few days. So the above URL should enable you to remotely access it in the meantime.

Thank you for your understanding!
